Criminal record certificate for sports
Criminal record certificates for sports clubs and voluntary organisations
Sport should be a safe place for children and young people. Right Person makes it easy to request, manage and document criminal record certificates for coaches, team leaders and everyone else responsible for minors — digital, automated and with full oversight.
What is a criminal record certificate?
There are different types of criminal record certificates depending on the role or responsibility someone will have. In sport, you specifically request a children's criminal record certificate (also known as a criminal record certificate for sport). The police then check whether the person has any records for sexual offences, violence or drugs — offences that are incompatible with a position of trust involving children and young people.
Who must present a criminal record certificate in sports clubs?
Everyone who has a position of trust or responsibility for children, minors or people with developmental disabilities in sport must present an up-to-date criminal record certificate. This applies from the age of 16, regardless of whether the role is paid or voluntary.
Typical examples are coaches, team leaders and instructors, but other roles may also be covered. The main rule is: if you're in doubt, a criminal record certificate must be obtained.
How long is a criminal record certificate valid?
For new appointments, the criminal record certificate must be dated within the last 3 months. If you already hold the same position over several years, the certificate remains valid as long as you don't change role or take on other duties in the club.
What is a purpose letter?
When someone applies for a criminal record certificate, the club must enclose a purpose letter to the police showing what role the applicant will have and why the certificate is necessary. The police only look at the registers relevant to the stated purpose. It's the sports club that issues the purpose letter — and we generate it automatically for you when you order a check through Right Person.
How does Right Person work for sports clubs?
- The club invites the candidate digitally. You enter name and email — the candidate gets a link within seconds.
- The purpose letter is created automatically. Right Person generates a correctly completed purpose letter that the candidate uses when applying for a criminal record certificate from the police.
- The check is returned to the club. You're notified when the check is ready — everything is stored securely and GDPR-compliant.
- Full oversight of the entire club. See who has a valid check, who's missing one, and when it's time to renew.
